Meet a Dog Safely

Ask the owner before approaching.
Let the dog see and smell you calmly.
Pet gently on the shoulder or back when invited.

Know When to Stop

Give space to a dog that is eating or sleeping.
Never pull ears, fur, paws, or tail.
Stop if the dog moves away, growls, or looks worried.

Handle Surprises

Stand still and quiet if an unfamiliar dog approaches.
Do not scream, run, or stare into its eyes.
Tell an adult about a loose or injured dog.

Keep Everyone Healthy

Wash hands after touching animals.
Do not share food with a dog.
Leave medical care and rescue to trained adults.
